Cable Car Kandersteg - Sunnbüel

History-charged walk to Valais and action-packed freeride trail

The Kandersteg – Sunnbüel aerial cableway takes you safely and quickly up to Sunnbüel at an altitude of 1,936 metres. On the terrace of the mountain restaurant with the same name, a unique panorama awaits you surrounded by breath-taking mountain scenery with such peaks as the Altels and Balmhorn, which look close enough to touch.

Sunnbüel is the starting point for the legendary trail over the Gemmi Pass to Leukerbad. This trail is regarded as a route with lots of history between the cantons of Bern and Valais, and as early as 1863 was offered by Thomas Cook as the first guided walk in Switzerland.

Today, this trail is very well maintained and presents no problems, even to inexperienced walkers, in winter and summer and offers an exclusive kind of experience. Half-way along the approximately 3-hour walk you arrive at the Schwarenberg mountain hotel, where you can partake of some gastronomic treats and stay overnight if you wish.

In spring after a 45-minute walk, with a slight detour you can marvel at a special kind of jewel - the Arvenseeli (small lakes). These three small lakes are only full in spring - with meltwater. With crystal clear water, nestling in the sparse Arven Wood, they are a real feast for the eyes.

If action is your kind of thing, in summer there is the freeride trail from Sunnbüel to Kandersteg. This is an extremely attractive trail, offering 4.7 km of cycling pleasure and an altitude difference of 720 m. The gondola cableway takes you and your bike onto Sunnbüel in comfort.
