The city of Bern
Not only is the city of Bern the Swiss capital, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the heart of Bern lies the wonderful old town with its six kilometres of arcades, under which visitors will find shelter from the rain and shade from hot sunshine in summer as they stroll around. In addition to these unique arcades, it is the "Zytglogge" clock tower, "Käfigturm" medieval tower, fountains with statues from the Renaissance, the Minster and extensively preserved sandstone façades which highlight the city of Bern (founded in 1191). In numerous cellar restaurants there are bars and cultural activities, as well specialist shops to be discovered. The old part of the city is surrounded by the River Aare. The river is more than just a body of water for the residents - in summer they also enjoy swimming in the Aare and engaging in the popular pastime of "Aareböötle" which involves messing around or relaxing in rubber dinghies on the Aare river. And because Bern was built on a peninsula, everything is close together and can be easily reached by bus, tram or on foot.
